Poultry excellence at Rafalés (Teruel)

We go to Rafalés , Teruel municipality, to visit José Ramón’s farm. A poultry farm for the fattening of chickens of 25 × 15 meters in dimension and a technical room of 5 × 5 meters.

From the moment we received the call from José Ramón, we did not hesitate to visit him to learn more about his needs in the type of poultry house he wanted to build.

This farm is a clear example of energy efficiency, animal welfare and innovation thanks to the establishment of a cooling structure through elongation of roof panels and another supporting structure.

“One of the main objectives I was looking for was the insulation and watertightness of the ship. Thanks to Agrometal Carrión I don’t have to worryJosé Ramón confesses.

Next, your manager tells us what it has been like to work with Agrometal Carrión.

1. What was the main motivation that led you to contact Agrometal Carrión? Why did you finally choose Agrometal Carrión?

The main reason was that I had colleagues from the sector who already knew the type of warehouses and the way of construction of Agrometal. In addition, I had a friend from the sector with many years of experience in the Andalusia area who gave me very good references.
After asking for quotes from different companies in the sector, I went to visit some warehouses built by Agrometal and the quality of the final finishes, finishes, construction characteristics, insulation, tightness, among others, were crucial to choose them.

2. What was the main need you wanted to cover with the project and how did Agrometal Carrión help you make it happen?

One of the main objectives he had was in the isolation and tightness of the ship. We had the test the day the ship was delivered to me as we did a test to see the depression that we achieved with the ship closed and a fan running. The result far exceeded expectations and it was proven that the ship has no heating leaks and is perfectly sealed.

3. What would you highlight of the work carried out by the Agrometal Carrión team in your poultry farm?

Mainly, I prefer professionalism and closeness. At all times they inform you of any doubt, incident or improvement in order for the ship to be perfect.

4. What benefits have you obtained later, in your day to day, thanks to the construction of this ship?

On the one hand, the savings in heating have been very large due to the high quality of the materials used in the insulation. Also, being so watertight you do not have air inlets where it should not be and there are no thermal bridges that cause so many problems in the quality of the beds and legs. All the technology they carry makes daily work very easy. Finally, the type of construction helps cleanings and washings with soap are fast, efficient and easy to do.

«The service that Agrometal Carrión has offered us is very good, since they have provided us with help and solutions at all times and the quality of the auctions is one of the best on the market»

5. What recommendation would you give to a professional who is thinking of building or renovating his poultry house?

Mainly it is the quality of the materials and the finishes that Agrometal Carrión offers is much superior to the rest of the companies in the sector. When you talk to other farmers, you realize how important it was to get some decisions right, and the advantages you are getting from it.

6.  How you assess the evolution of the sector?

The evolution of the sector at the moment I see it with a lot of uncertainty because there are many new farms and it is not clear to me if the market is capable of assuming the volume of chickens that can be produced throughout the country. In addition, I see how the sector is at a time when biosecurity, salmonella, and in general, the quality of the legs and chicken have become very important and we will have to adapt to very strict regulations by the different administrations, in order to meet the quality standards required by the integrator.

Working with José Ramón has been a quality and professional work experience thanks to the good reception they gave us from day one.

How to achieve maximum energy savings on your farm?

From Agrometal today we move to Rafael’s farm in Fuente Obejuna (Córdoba).

Rafael’s new facilities are a clear example of energy efficiency thanks to the establishment of solar panels on his chicken farm. The result: sustainable and profitable poultry facilities that achieve greater energy savings while reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

«The main advantage of this installation is that you have practically amortized it in 4 years, saving up to 60% of energy in summer«. Rafael confesses.

Next, Rafael offers us his testimony of how this entire transformation process has been:

1. What was the main motivation that led you to the decision to install solar panels on your farm?

The main motivation, although it sounds a bit bad, was mainly economic. But the idea that it was environmentally friendly and sustainable is much better.

2. What needs does the installation of this sustainable system cover?

In winter it can cover up to 40% of the energy needs we require and in summer up to 25%. It is true that now we only have contracted a power of 10 KW, but we plan to contract an additional 10 KW to fully optimize its installation. With 10 KW more we would be able to save a little more in winter and in summer up to 50 or 60% of consumption, since in summer we need more power due to cooling. We would not become totally self-sufficient, but energy savings would be optimized much more.

3. Can you explain the advantages of using this system over other more traditional ones?

The main advantage of this installation is that you have practically amortized it in 4 years. At the beginning you have to make an initial investment, but you are sure that you will fully recover it in about 4 years depending on the climatic zone in which you find yourself, ultimately achieving significant energy savings. If I had installed these plates 10 years ago when I installed my poultry houses, I would have been reducing costs for 6 years.

4. Do you think that self-consumption of energy in chicken farming can guarantee the viability of the sector?

In my opinion, the energy savings that you can achieve is very large. But to guarantee total viability in this sector, other determining factors influence such as that the integrators give a fair price to the rancher, among others.

At Agrometal we remain committed to offering the best service and that is why we have taken another step in the implementation of technological processes and commitment to the environment, betting on the Sustainable Rural Development.

We have currently signed an agreement with the company photovoltaic installations for self-consumption, Use The Sun. In this way, we include within our services the installation of self-consumption systems so that poultry farms can be efficient through the consumption of renewable and profitable energy, achieving greater energy savings.

Use The Sun is a collaborator with whom we share our values: trust, seriousness, quality, advice and tireless search to solve the problems of farmers and entrepreneurs.

Interview with Joaquín Martínez, poultry entrepreneur

The Agrometal Carrión team has started the last phases in the construction of the Margo Avícola broiler farm located in Jerez del Marquesado (Granada). Therefore, we have conducted an interview with Joaquín Martínez, entrepreneur in the poultry sector and owner of the farm

– Joaquín, why have you started in the sector?

From Agrometal today we move to Rafael’s farm in Fuente Obejuna (Córdoba).

All my life I have been an administrative worker and I have worked in different sectors, including the meat sector. After my time at the well-known AVINATUR integrator, I have known the different phases that the chicken goes through, from the incubator to the slaughter room, passing through the farm.

At my age (50), I had the illusion of starting my own business. All my relatives live in Jerez del Marquesado and I have always liked the way of life of the town. Building my own chicken farm gives me the opportunity to take up residence in Jerez without separating from my family.

– How have your family and friends valued this decision?

My family owns a cereal, sheep and almond farm. This has been one of the reasons that has encouraged me to take the initiative and set up my own poultry farm.

My colleagues at Avinatur have also supported and helped me in the decision, they are great experts in the sector and when I raised the possibility of setting up a farm they encouraged me to start this project. Without a doubt, it is a very thoughtful decision and with a lot of support behind it.

– What are your expectations for the next few years? What are the challenges of poultry farming?

Expectations for the next few years are positive. Having previous knowledge in the sector, I think that we can face the challenges more easily. We have seen that at this time the sector is booming and we will have the opportunity for growth.

The main challenge for this sector is to compete with the big guys. Our role will be very open to the large integrators, depending largely on a single client.

In the long term, we have expectations of continuing to grow and stabilize in the market to be able to maintain the family farm in future generations.

– How do you assess the design and capacity of the facilities?

I value very positively all the work done by Agrometal Carrión. Choosing them to build my farm is no accident. I have traveled through many provinces in Spain. I have visited facilities in Albacete, Valencia, Cuenca, Almería,… and I have seen many farms. Agrometal Carrión has been the one that transmitted the highest quality and professionalism to me.

The best poultry complex I have seen is ” La carrasquilla ” in the town of Utiel. The chicken fattening farm is our reference and its facilities were built by Agrometal Carrión.
